Source: SearchLight Digital, Q1 2026 (data Jan 1–Mar 26, 2026) — 524 plumbing contractors, $14.6M non-branded spend ($15.9M including PMax), 2,554 non-branded and 169 PMax campaigns, 95,749 leads, CRM-attributed revenue only. Single vendor's client dataset — see caveat below.
What the numbers mean
Plumbing is one of the most expensive trades on non-branded Search: $183 average CPL against $149 for HVAC and $128 for electrical in the same dataset (SearchLight, Q1 2026). The spread across accounts matters more than the average — the 10th percentile pays $77 a lead while the 90th pays $396, a 5x gap between well-run and poorly-run accounts in the same trade. Performance Max's $82 CPL looks dramatically cheaper, but SearchLight could not separate branded from non-branded within PMax, so part of that gap is branded demand riding along. Downstream is where plumbing recovers: a median 18.4% of leads become paying customers at a median $333 cost per customer, against a $1,680 average ticket — median account-level ROAS 5.54x (non-branded campaigns alone measured 2.58x).

Category-level proxies (LocaliQ Home & Home Improvement)
No credible plumbing-specific CPC, CTR or CVR source exists for 2026. The closest sourced figures are LocaliQ/WordStream's Home & Home Improvement category — much broader than plumbing, so treat as context only: CPC $8.33, CTR 6.47%, CVR 8.05%, CPL $90.92 (LocaliQ/WordStream 2026, data Apr 2025–Mar 2026). The lower category CPL reflects the mix — plumbing skews emergency, high-intent and high-bid.
What changed in 2026
Like HVAC, plumbing got its first large-sample dataset with revenue attached rather than just click costs. The same health warning applies: this is SearchLight's own client base — contractors with CRM integration, which selects for better-instrumented operations — and no independent replication exists. Percentile tables beat single averages precisely because vendor datasets like this one are lumpy.
How to act on this
Anchor on the median ($168) and percentiles, not the $183 average — one bad month in a big account moves an average. Optimize for cost per paying customer, not CPL: at an 18.4% paying rate, a "cheap" $107 lead that never books is worth less than a $250 lead that does. Break out water-heater campaigns — at $256/lead they need their own budget and their own ticket math. And treat PMax's $82 CPL as unproven until you can see branded vs non-branded composition in your own data.
