Primary and secondary conversion status is a Google Ads control that distinguishes conversion actions used in the main Conversions column and bidding from actions kept mainly for observation; other platforms use different selection controls.

Why it matters

A measurement stack can contain many useful events without asking bidding to optimize toward all of them. Separating core outcomes from diagnostics prevents page views, duplicate imports and micro-conversions from overpowering business results.

How it works across ad platforms

Platform or systemCurrent treatment
Google AdsPrimary/secondary status plus account-default or campaign-specific goals.
LinkedInConversion must be associated with ad sets; select intended rule.
MetaChoose dataset and conversion event at ad-set/campaign setup.
TikTokSelect an eligible standard event; custom events cannot optimize.
RedditSelect optimization event appropriate to objective.
Microsoft AdvertisingGoal inclusion/count settings govern reporting/bidding behavior.
PinterestSelect eligible conversion event for objective.

Implementation rules

  • Choose one canonical outcome per business stage.
  • Keep duplicates and diagnostics out of core bidding.
  • Audit campaign-level selections.
  • Document temporary higher-funnel optimization.
  • Change status only after volume/quality review.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving GA4 import and native Google action both primary.
  • Assuming a created LinkedIn rule is automatically attached.
  • Optimizing TikTok to a custom event.
  • Using every measured interaction as a goal.

Minimum QA

  • List all active campaign goals.
  • Compare with event dictionary.
  • Check duplicate sources.
  • Verify reporting columns.
  • Review after new event creation.
