Offline Conversion
Offline conversion explained — crediting in-store, phone, and CRM outcomes back to ads, which fails most often before the lead ever reaches the CRM.

Updated July 22, 2026.
An offline conversion is a qualified lead, opportunity, phone outcome, in-store purchase, closed sale or other event observed in CRM, POS, call or backend systems and later transmitted to an advertising platform.
Why it matters
Browser leads are often proxies. Offline conversion tracking closes the loop by telling the platform which leads became valuable outcomes. It requires identifiers captured early, authoritative event timing and a disciplined upload cadence.
How it works across ad platforms
| Platform or system | Current treatment |
|---|---|
| Google Ads | Data Manager/enhanced conversions for leads and current import paths. |
| Meta | Datasets and Conversions API for offline events; old offline-event-set API retired. |
| CSV, Conversions API and eligible CRM Sync. | |
| TikTok | Events API or approved partners for offline events. |
| Conversions API and current match-key/event metadata workflows. | |
| Microsoft Advertising | Offline goal with MSCLKID, file/schedule/API, restate/retract. |
| Ads Manager CSV, LiveRamp or Conversions API. |
Implementation rules
- Create a distinct conversion definition for each lifecycle stage.
- Capture click and identity keys at lead creation.
- Use actual stage-change time.
- Upload frequently.
- Send values from CRM/POS.
- Correct or retract invalid outcomes where supported.
Common mistakes
- Uploading all historical CRM contacts as new conversions.
- Using report-run time as conversion time.
- Sending every stage as a separate customer without a value model.
- Waiting until quarter-end.
- Failing to store click IDs.
Minimum QA
- Create test lead and stage change.
- Verify identifiers in CRM.
- Upload one row/event.
- Resolve processing errors.
- Reconcile matched and unmatched counts.
