Consent Mode
Consent mode explained — the mechanism that communicates a user's consent state to tags, and why one vendor's flag does not control every platform.

Updated July 22, 2026.
Consent mode is a platform-specific mechanism for communicating a user’s consent state to tags or advertising systems so data collection and modeling behavior can adjust.
Why it matters
Advertising tags can collect identifiers and event data subject to privacy law, platform policy and user choice. A consent signal must be implemented before or with tag behavior, tested by region and documented.
How it works across ad platforms
| Platform or system | Current treatment |
|---|---|
| Google Consent Mode integrates consent states with Google tags and advertising/analytics behavior. | |
| Microsoft | Microsoft documents Consent Mode and TCF requirements for applicable EEA, UK and Switzerland traffic. |
| Meta/TikTok/LinkedIn/Reddit/Pinterest | Use each platform’s business-tool terms, privacy settings and current consent-compatible integration guidance; do not assume Google consent parameters control them. |
Implementation rules
- Use a consent management mechanism appropriate to the site and regions.
- Set default state before tags execute.
- Update state after choice.
- Map every vendor intentionally.
- Test accept, reject and partial choices.
- Keep consent evidence and deployment records.
Common mistakes
- Loading tags before default consent state.
- Assuming server-side bypasses consent.
- Using one vendor’s consent flag for every platform without integration.
- Not testing returning users or regional rules.
Minimum QA
- Inspect network calls before choice.
- Test each choice.
- Check tag diagnostics.
- Review regional behavior.
- Document CMP/version changes.
