Updated July 22, 2026.

A custom event is an event name created by the advertiser rather than selected from the platform’s standard event dictionary.

Why it matters

A custom event can preserve a meaningful business action that does not fit a standard name. It also creates governance risk: names can proliferate, definitions can drift, and platform product eligibility may be narrower than for standard events.

How it works across ad platforms

Platform or systemCurrent treatment
MetaCustom events can be sent by Pixel/CAPI and may be classified by custom conversions.
TikTokCustom events support reporting and audiences but not campaign optimization.
RedditUnlimited custom events can be sent, but only the 20 most recent are visible in the dashboard.
PinterestCustom is one of the current event types.
Microsoft AdvertisingA UET Custom Event goal matches category/action/label/value fields.
Google AdsCustom website behavior is implemented as a conversion action/event; GA4 custom events can also be imported.
LinkedInUse the Other category or current source-specific rule when no precise category fits.

Implementation rules

  • Prefer a standard event when accurate.
  • Use a stable human-readable name.
  • Keep IDs, dates and campaign names out of event names.
  • Maintain a data dictionary with owner, trigger and allowed parameters.
  • Verify optimization eligibility before making the event a campaign dependency.

Common mistakes

  • Creating a different event name for every form or product.
  • Using a TikTok custom event as the only optimization signal.
  • Letting dynamic Reddit custom names push governed events out of the 20-event dashboard view.
  • Renaming a standard Purchase event to an internal acronym.

Minimum QA

  • Test exact name and case.
  • Verify parameters contain no sensitive data.
  • Confirm reporting/audience/optimization eligibility.
  • Monitor for unexpected new names.
