Updated July 2026.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content more likely to be surfaced, cited, and recommended inside AI-generated answers — from ChatGPT and Gemini to Google’s AI Overviews — rather than only ranking in traditional search results.

Why invest in GEO?

AI-referred traffic behaves differently from ordinary organic. It converts about 4.4x better than organic (Semrush) and spends roughly 68% more time on site (SE Ranking). Adobe reported AI-referred traffic to US retail up 393% year over year in Q1 2026, converting 42% better by March 2026. And buyers increasingly start in AI: 51% begin product research in AI chatbots (G2, March 2026 survey, n=1,076).

What about llms.txt?

Adoption is early — 5.61% of the top 10K sites as of a June 2026 crawl — and Google Search ignores llms.txt, though Chrome’s Lighthouse 13.3 audits it. It is a low-cost signal, not a ranking guarantee.
